Kitchen Ventilation Systems

Built in 1914, Creelman Hall is located on Trent Lane in the heart of the University of Guelph campus. It serves as both the main dining hall and a multipurpose rental venue for various events.

Challenges

In 2013, this two-storey, 30,334 square-foot building underwent a $4.4-million facelift, which included external improvements and major refurbishments of the dining, servery, and kitchen facilities.

The Solution

We teamed up with Spring Air Systems to design a highly versatile and energy-efficient kitchen ventilation system. The kitchen features 11 efficient Dynaflow low-air volume hoods, a Truflow/Zoneflow demand-ventilation panel with two independent exhaust fans, and one common make-up air unit.

To ensure seamless operation, BACnet communication connects the Truflow/Zoneflow panel to the building management system, allowing for optimized control and monitoring of the kitchen ventilation. The design of the kitchen hoods was carried out in collaboration with food service equipment consultant, LTD Consulting Group Inc., ensuring that the new systems meet both performance and culinary needs.

Our Approach

Our approach emphasized collaboration with all stakeholders, focusing on energy efficiency and adaptability to support the diverse functions of Creelman Hall. By integrating advanced technology and efficient design, we aimed to enhance the overall dining experience while ensuring compliance with modern standards.

Conclusion

The successful renovation of Creelman Hall, supported by O’Dell  and Spring Air Systems, has transformed the dining experience at the University of Guelph. With a state-of-the-art kitchen ventilation system in place, the facility is now better equipped to serve the needs of its community and host a variety of events in a comfortable and efficient environment.
