The “Turducken” of HVAC Systems

As we gear up for the holiday season, we’d like to serve up a project so unique and layered, it’s been nicknamed the “Turducken”. Much like the famous Thanksgiving dish that combines turkey, duck, and chicken, this custom HVAC system brings together four of O’Dell’s manufacturers in one deliciously innovative package.

The Challenge:
For a long-term care facility, the engineer required an energy recovery solution with 0% Exhaust Air Transfer Ratio (EATR)—no air crossover between the exhaust and supply sides. This is no small feat, as most energy recovery cores have at least some air crossover.

The Ingredients:

  • Energy Recovery Core:. BPE delivered their unique static energy recovery core capable of achieving the 0% EATR requirement
  • Custom Unit Design: Envent stepped in to craft a fully custom rooftop ERV unit incorporating the BPE core.
  • Heating, Cooling, and Humidification: As the design evolved, we layered on the LG VRF air handling system for heating and cooling.
  • Humidification: Finally, we garnished with a Neptronic electric humidifier to handle moisture control.

The Feast:

What started as a single ERV quickly became a feast of 10 fully custom units, each one meticulously factory-installed, piped, and tested before shipping to the site. These units are NetZero-ready, ensuring the facility stays efficient and sustainable for years to come.

Why “Turducken”?
Like the holiday dish, this project layers multiple elements into one seamless creation:

  • BPE Core for energy recovery – >85% efficiency, No Moving Parts.
  • Envent Custom Unit for design and manufacturing.
  • LG VRF System for heating and cooling.
  • Neptronic Humidifier for perfect moisture levels.

Just as a Turducken delights the palate, this project satisfies complex engineering needs with a touch of holiday spirit. At O’Dell, we pride ourselves on working with our partners to cook up solutions that bring every ingredient together perfectly.

From Our Table to Yours
As we approach the holidays, we’re grateful for opportunities to collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and partners to serve up innovative HVAC solutions. Here’s to more projects like the Turducken—and maybe a little extra gravy!
